4th of July. Foster a Dog Four Days. Save Lives.

Every 4th of July, Los Angeles Animal Services shelters experience a spike of incoming dogs due to fireworks — dogs that escape their homes due to fear. These incoming dogs require space in the shelter which puts existing shelter dogs at higher risk for euthanasia.

This is where you come in. By fostering an available, adoptable dog for four days you make space for the incoming dogs. Not only do you help that shelter dog and our shelter, but you’re also helping the owners of those potentially lost dogs with the time to reunite with their beloved family member.

How does it work?

There are a few simple things you need to know and do to participate in the Four Days for Life program. Please read through them carefully so you can save lives this 4th of July.

 

Apply to be a laas foster now!

  • Fill out your LAAS foster application.

  • Bring a valid form of identification.

  • If you have a dog, bring proof of their current Los Angeles Animal Services license.

    • If they’re not currently licensed, get a license here.

    • They will need a current Rabies vaccination.

 

Find your local shelter

  • East Valley Center – 14409 Vanowen St., Van Nuys, CA 91405

  • Harbor Center – 957 N. Gaffey Street, San Pedro, CA 90731

  • North Central Center – 3201 Lacy Street, Los Angeles, CA 90031

  • Chesterfield Square Center – 1850 W. 60th St. Los Angeles, CA 90047

  • West Los Angeles Center – 11361 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90064

  • West Valley Center – 20655 Plummer Street, Chatsworth, CA 91311

Decide what dog to foster

  • Any dog that is available to adopt and is spayed/neutered can be fostered. The Available Date is listed on the kennel card.

  • Available dogs will also have a red, white, and blue sticker on their kennel card.

  • Please note: you cannot bring your dog to do a meet & greet.

How does this help the dogs when they return to the shelter you ask?

  • Before you convince yourself you can’t do this because you would feel bad taking a dog back to the shelter — stop! Don’t miss out on an important opportunity to save a life and instead think of it as a weekend to learn VERY important information about the pup that will help them get adopted when they return to the shelter.

  • Having a dog out of the shelter even just for a few days allows you to share important info with shelter staff and volunteers when they come back : how did they do in the crate, how are they on leash, what is their energy level like, etc. This information helps staff and volunteers match the dogs with adopters or network them for rescue!

  • Use the hashtag #4days4life on all of your social media posts for the weekend and spread the good word. Tell everyone you know about your foster…you never know who may be looking. Also, most local rescue groups will check the hashtag to see how dogs are doing in their new home environment and may even be willing to rescue the dog based on what you’ve shown them.

Considering giving that pup or cat a forever home instead of fostering? Do it! For the dates of June 29th, 30th, July 2nd, and July 3rd dog adoptions are 50% off and cat adoptions are free at all Los Angeles Animal Services locations.

Adoption fees include vaccinations, spaying/neutering and microchipping for both dogs and cats. The first year City of Los Angeles license fee for dogs is also included.
